August 12, 20179 yr The Herald made a good analogy using the Heat.... Sherman is like Mickey Arison and Jeter is like Pat Riley.
August 12, 20179 yr Deal is now officially in the commissioners office. Didn't it still need the approve from other 29 owners ?
August 12, 20179 yr Well here's hoping Tommy Hutton gets rehired(if he even wants to come back) get those ugly ass uniforms replaced with a logo more like the original. that hr monstrosity removed! and finally some smart baseball people to run this team and make it a winner..
August 12, 20179 yr The Herald made a good analogy using the Heat.... Sherman is like Mickey Arison and Jeter is like Pat Riley. Arison is much wealthier than Sherman. That is why I think Mas may have been better.
August 12, 20179 yr But isn't it frightening that Jeter probably doesn't know anything about running this team, given his total lack of business experience? The only thing going for him is his Yankees pedigree and "clean" image (which I think is kind of laughable anyway). You are totally right. And I totally agree. But there are 2 halfs to this. And I've been waiting to celebrate the first half of this for 11 or so years....Loria selling the team (if this is really the actual official sale coming up):
August 12, 20179 yr I do definitely agree that fans who go to 1-2 games a year and only casually follow the team are going to be thrilled about this. I'm thrilled and a little worried. Can't I be both? There are positives here and unknowns. At least we no longer have the worst owner in sports. Do you think the media is going to blast Jeter any chance they get going forward? No way. No longer being the joke of MLB is kinda nice for right now. I'll take it.
August 12, 20179 yr Mas said to be in talks to join Jeter for Miami Marlins. I think having him aboard would also be great for the franchise and the community. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-08-12/jorge-mas-is-said-to-be-in-talks-to-join-jeter-for-miami-marlins
August 12, 20179 yr Definitely not my first choice. Sherman lives in Naples so at least Florida, right? I was surprised to see Sherman's net worth is only (lol) $500 million. Before I looked I would have guessed $1 billion. If Jeter hires a team of SABR guys then I'm fine with all of this. If you're a Marlins fan, this is a MONUMENTAL day. I will say this, though, the more HR's Stanton hits this season the more of a PR disaster Jeter will have on his hands if they decide to go FIRE SALE (which is not necessarily a bad plan) in the offseason.
August 12, 20179 yr I wouldn't assume that the Sherman net worth number from the Internet is correct. If you google it, it says his net worth is $500 million. He's reportedly investing upwards of $400 million in the team...so I doubt he's investing the majority of his wealth into the team. If he's putting in that much, he must be a billionaire.

That's not how net worth works. If he buys the Marlins at market value, his net worth won't go down. Net worth is essentially how much wealth you have if you decide to sell off everything you own, pay all your debts, and ride off into the sunset. (Simplified explanation, but you get the point). This is why Mas was probably the better choice. He had more of a surplus of "worth" to play with and invest in the Marlins.
August 12, 20179 yr He wasn’t wrong. He would be investing most of his wealth into the team as he said. That’s not a common tactic. Given how much these teams appreciate, it wouldn't surprise me. I think it's a pretty good investment, especially since the guy is retired.
August 12, 20179 yr I believe the guy has already said his plan is to turn this over to his children sooner than later. Sounds like he bought this like a gift for his kids as much as for himself. I don't know if that's good or bad but I think it's interesting and worth pointing out.

That would be ideal.
August 12, 20179 yr I saw that too, would put in 200 mil and replace Sherman as controlling owner. That would be ideal. That would be the second best outcome. Hopefully it happens
August 12, 20179 yr Given how much these teams appreciate, it wouldn't surprise me. I think it's a pretty good investment, especially since the guy is retired. Nobody is going to put that high a percentage of their wealth into this team.
August 12, 20179 yr I saw that too, would put in 200 mil and replace Sherman as controlling owner. That would be ideal. Networth of Mas far surpasses Sherman's. Maybe it's something MLB and Rob Manfred should take into consideration.
August 12, 20179 yr or perhaps we should combine Mas and Sherman's networth and build a "Super Bullpen"
August 12, 20179 yr From what I read, many of the ownership group are venture capitalists and fund operators. While any change from Loria is overall a positive, it is far from certain this team's MO changes dramatically, but at least, hoping certain personnel decisions are better thought out (like getting rid of young rising players for aging and/or mediocre crap, Latos, Rodney, Cashner, etc). With so many minority owners to consider, who could have be looking for some return on their investment, the partnership agreement better have some stiff restrictive provisions as to decision making and that losses will be part of the strategy. I feel it clearly will. Like Loria, these guys are smart enough to understand that the return is at the back end, so it is doubtful they are looking at this as a consistent stream of income.
August 12, 20179 yr It would make things a lot more promising if Mas gets involved somehow. According to rumors, he had already extended an offer to join up with Jeter back when the media considered Mas to be the frontrunner. Overall, I'm happy that Loria is on his way out and I'm certainly giving this group the benefit of the doubt to succeed. Considering the Marlins have pretty much been at rock bottom recently, it's pretty likely that some things improve. I just hope that Hill and Samson will be gone after the transitional period expires. Their departures are the first two things this franchise needs. Why the Samson hating?
