I know you know and most others know all of this, but to consolidate frustration: Because Bruce gave the FO a horrible opening day budget under $80m and it's really hard to put together a complete team for that price. It goes without saying, they'd be a lot better with 2-3 more guys. Even if that's just Rizzo (DFA Aguilar), Tepera, and Kiermaier and not a "star." They could have done that for under $100m with no longterm deals on the books. Also, did Bruce stick them with Don by telling them we're not signing a new Manager to a 4 year deal this offseason so they had the decision of going with Don or an internal interim? That's the question I really want to know. Did Bruce dictate that or Ng? Or both? Because even with the BS payroll, Ng/FO didn't have the foresight/creativity to get anything at CF and an upgrade somewhere else. The farm is loaded, there is clearly opportunities to get club controlled players from other teams. Likewise, and some hindsight bias here which may not be fair, the prospect hoarding isn't exactly working out as Watson is flat out not good right now, Bleday's AFL has not translated (even if there are some encouraging signs), and they bet right on Luzardo so they could easily afford to move a big name prospect pitcher for something. Also the obvious - what the hell are Garcia and Stallings doing? You can understand why they got them on some level, but performance will out weigh the thought process eventually and they are bad right now. Likewise, the good old Aguilar/Soler/Cooper redundancy. Aguilar should have went and this Ng needs to own big time as that's $7m that could have been used for a CF/pen upgrade. Where is Meyer also May 1st (or is this Bruce not setting payroll expectations so they have to keep him down for Super2 purposes)? Because it's the players. Floro/Bender/Sulser/Bleier had 5+ WAR last year and are a hard negative right now. Even if the Garcia signing wasn't going to work out, a .547 OPS? No one would expect that. Stallings also. He's bad at framing pitches now when some scouts called him second to Johnny Bench defensively this offseason? Really? What is Rogers doing this year? He's probably the worst one right now. This isn't all the FO fault. These are next level drops in production and the guys on the field do get some major blame here for not adjusting to whatever it is they are facing (that could also be coaching to get back to Don, hence how it is all an intertwined web of sucking). Because it's luck. Things also have to go wrong to go 6-15 in 1 run games. A lot of them. Injuries can be mentioned here as Luzardo is out, they are having some problems with Wendle/Anderson/Berti/Jazz all being banged up at the same time, Floro has never been right, Meyer is hurt, etc. So big picture, Don's extremely poor bullpen usage, wacky lineups, and some other moves have certainly cost them some games, but they also gave him a few less players than is reasonable, and some of the players are just playing like assholes. Plus some tough breaks. Blame gets passed all around, but for me, it starts from the top. Give the FO $100-110m next year and let them pick a reasonably priced manager, and my guess is there is major course correction instantly. That creates depth to deal with player performance/injuries at a minimum. I'd blame Don second because end of the day, a +19 run differential is pretty good (and that's through mismanagement!) and the FO put together this team, so tactical day-to-day decisions are likely causing some of these losses. Then Ng-FO/players/luck kick in all to varying degrees. It's just everything. They kind of remind me of the Florida Panthers - doing nothing for years with some great young players and all of a sudden, it just clicks. It's likely not happening this year, but they do have the ace-blueprint to make this work quickly if they get those last few pieces in place. Again, starts from the top. Panthers spend money. Marlins don't.

June 3, 20224 yr Nobody would have seen the Marlins bullpen of mostly unproven guys until last year struggle this year...expect those that know how baseball works and has gone on record saying that bullpens are the most fickle things in baseball, easiest to fix year over year and easiest to have fail as well. Relievers cant truly be relied upon until they give you a good 2 years of quality production, preferably back to back years. Until then its all a lot of outliers and generally a guy that was 28 when he 'first made it as a reliever' was awful until that time, and we are surprised he went back to being awful? Weird. Garcia was also an awful sign, I said so at the time, he went from a positive hitters park to Miami which well, isnt. But NOOOOOOOOO Das has no clue what he is talking about. Thrilled the Marlins have guys like Lopez and Sandy. Less thrilled they are wasting their massively great years. Cabrera has the potential to do the same, but in the Marlins genius, hasnt ever really been given a chance cause well, GOTTA PROTECT HIM! (from making money).
