So we think Loria is going to offer him a 6 year contract worth at least $130+ million, because that's the minimum in years and money he probably even considers. 8/$175 is probably the high end of the range (but I would think Stanton would only go up to 6 so he can be a free agent at 30/31 to cash in again). The low end of that is the 32nd most valuable contract in MLB history, the top end 13th most valuable. This also ignores that every indication is that he wants to get back to California and is a free agent in 2 years with $6.5 million in his pocket, and an upcoming enormous 2015 arbitration award likely doubling that. Meaning he has real money and the Marlins leverage is low.

 

So you think Loria is doing that, when he could cash Stanton in for a half dozen young players and use that same money to pay for 3-4 entire seasons of payroll versus having to pay just Stanton for 6 years. This is really easy, if they were going to sign him, they would have done it already. They aren't stupid, they know what they had in him even before this season. The front office gets it. They just don't control the purse. Papa Loria needs his money. Enjoy it while it lasts.

 

Also, I would like to add if they approached Stanton this last November for a 7 year deal (i.e. same date range as above 6 year hypothetical) before the MVP season onslaught, he likely accepts 7/$90-100 as that was realistic comps to Cargo, Upton, etc. Meaning the Marlins have made a $30+ million mistake if they do indeed sign him to some deal around $130+ million. That would be fantastic. We are all happy because they actually kept him, yet pissed because the planning was so horrible it costs them a Saltalamacchia level player across the span of that contract because of how poor they planned the whole thing, despite it being 100% obvious. That's so Marlins.

I think they'll offer him something, but something low enough that they're betting he'll turn down. That way they can say "we tried but clearly his heart is in Cali, etc, etc" and then still get the return back.

 

 

and I think Lou mentioned some time ago that just paying him arby & letting him go FA w/ draft picks might not be the worst thing... but I wonder now with Jose out if that becomes less attractive. Is it worth keeping Stanton a load of $ in arby for 2 years if Jose is only there for 1 of them? Plus the picks at that point probably don't help until 18/19, with that would you just rather take the trade package now where the return would (ideally) help sooner?

They will totally low ball him and do that, and say he's going to California. That's not even a question.

 

I don't mind keeping him through arbitration if they really go for it in 2016, but Loria is going to need to increase payroll to $70 for that to happen, i.e. sign two major free agents, likely infield bats.

Signing Stanton long-term has always meant a contract a few notches over "comps".

 

Stanton deserves more, he is a few notches better than slotted history.

Stanton's agent would not have accepted 7/100 a year ago and won't accept 6/130 in the fall, trust me.

It'll happen in the fall though. at 6/150 guaranteed but less up front. The structure is in place already with both sides agreeable.

After the season the only thing left is to present it to Stanton. Until then, let's enjoy him and hope he challenges some records. He is in a zone and a half that looks to last all season

I'm not pretending. You're right I originally did say 10/200...just negotiating. Get over it, Ii's been awhile. Quickly afterwards, 2 years ago, I lowered the hypothetical to 10/150+.

I think maybe your still pissed because though you did see him as a plus player, you didn't see him as the ++ player others saw. I forget quickly the reasons you give...I believe one was something about KO/PA% maybe. Cope with having a generational superstar on the team.
